Hi All,

I'm in the process of buying a new Cam and i want a external mic for interviews, background etc...the Cam comes with a half decent mic ECM XM1 but i think i'll go for another as supplied Mic's are usually not brilliant..

I was thinking Sennheiser ME66 shotgun or Rode NTG2...also boom poles, etc...

Any opinions or ideas ???

Cheers

Hi Dean,

I recently bought the Rode NTG2, it's pretty good for the money (about £130) and it's far better than the mic the V1 came with - which is rubbish, next to useless.

The Sennheiser ME66 is probably better and more directional - although the ME66 is a lot more expensive, but you can add to the system as it is modular.

Mick Jenner who is a member of the forum has the ME66 & ME67 - he could probably tell you more about them.

If you have the money - go for the Sennheiser. On a tight budget - go for the Rode (they also do cheapish boom poles, shock mounts etc.).

Cheers
Pete

Cheers Pete,

I asked one of the producers at Bristol and he said they use sennheiser as well... But probably the really expensive ones... I'll think about it as Rodes have been recommended by a lot of people..And as you pointed out..cheaper...

Hi Dean,

Just something else to consider depending on what you are using a shotgun mic for.

I read this somewhere by the way, and is not from personal experience.

If you are using the ME66 on a camera, it will be great, because it will obviously follow the camera, but, if you're using it on a boom pole, the sound person has to be very accurate as it is highly directional, the Rode is a bit more forgiving in this aspect as the pickup spectrum is wider.

As I say, this is just something I'd read when I was looking at mic's. Would it be worth waiting to see what the mic is like on the new cam before splashing out? Just a thought.

Cheers
Pete

Hi Pete,

Absolutely...

The only prob i've had with on board mic's is they tend to pick up the noise of the camera...But then again these were cheaper mic's...

I will endeavour to find a suitable one at an affordable price... :D

Cheers again

Dean

P.s have we hijacked this forum... it will be soon called the 'Dean & Pete show' Or vice versa...

Hi Dean - I purchased a second hand Sennheiser 416 for not a lot of money and it does the job for extremely well, picking up slightly less side and rear sound than the ME66 - though you'll need a phantom power source if you cam doesn't give you one on the XLR inputs.

You do tend to get camera noise on cheaper mics, mainly because the mount is a cheap and nasty piece of plastic. If you buy a decent shock mount you shouldn't get any camera noise.

Andy makes a good point about phantom power. The difference between the NTG1 & the NTG2 is that the NTG2 uses an AA battery to power it, as well as phantom - so you have the option of using the mic in different circumstances powered by the battery.

The NTG1 is shorter as it doesn't have the battery compartment.

Have a look at this site and type in Rode in the search box
http://www.absolutemusic.co.uk

They have both mics, deadcat, boom pole and shock mount.

The 'Dean & Pete' Show!  That's funny! Swap it round and we could be Ice Skating Wildlife Filmmakers

'Torville & Dean' - Pete & Dean

What are you like!

Hi Dean,

As Pete mentioned that I have both the M66 + M67 I though I had better put in an appearance.

I find the M66 a good directional mic for for our type of work, but side and rear sound is not completely eliminated.

The M67 is much more directional, but you have to be aware of distant sound. I have recorded early in the early morning in the New Forest and when facing east or north east can pick the road noise up from the M27 several miles away.

For a general purpose mic for wildlife at lower end of the budget I would go for the M66 (unless you can pick up a second hand 416 at good price)

Unlike camera's, recording formats etc mics are a long term investment the technology hasn't changed for years.

Hope this is of help

Regards

Mick

How to output microphone during band practice? I've recently gotten together with a few buddies to hang out and play music in my basement. For the vocals, I'm planning on purchasing a dynamic mic but one thing I'm not sure is what to plug a microphone into so I can get the sound out. Is it a amp that I have to plug it into or something else? help!
